What is a fire, and why does it... what's the word... burn?
Attempting and failing to play catch-up during a very busy year
My god, this has been the busiest of years. I feel like I barely had a summer and now we’re already at the end of October! I’m not sure where the time went, but I would very much appreciate if it slowed down just a bit.
Hopefully sometime soon I’ll actually sit down and write some reviews, but for now, here’s everything I’ve read and loved lately. (And by “lately” I mean over the past 4+ months.)
Oh, and PS: I now have an affiliate page on Bookshop.org. So, if you purchase any of the books through the links below, Books & Booze will receive a commission AND you’ll still be supporting independent bookstores across the country!
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren paired with a Mai Tai
The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness paired with your favorite Cabernet
The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley paired with a gin and tonic, preferably one with Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice gin or something similarly botanical
Evicted by Matthew Desmond paired with a stiff dose of reality and a vodka soda chaser
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera paired with a Corpse Reviver (no.1 or no. 2, your call)
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whittaker paired with The Haunted
First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston paired with a Mint Julep
None of This is True by Lisa Jewell paired with a flute of sparkling wine
Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll paired with sweet tea and vodka
The Cliff House by Chris Brookmyre paired with a peated scotch, such as Laphroaig
The Women by Kristin Hannah paired with gin on the rocks
Quick reminder: if you use the links in this newsletter to purchase a book, Books & Booze will receive a commission. You can also find links to books I’ve previously reviewed in my new affiliate storefront on Bookshop.org. And if you don’t purchase through these links, please support your local independent bookstore and buy through them.
To find a brick-and-mortar store near you, IndieBound.org has a very helpful bookstore finder tool, or you can support some of the places I like to shop by popping in or checking out their websites. Main Point Books in Wayne, PA, is a favorite, as is Phoenix Books in Vermont, and my old stomping grounds in La Jolla, CA, Warwicks, is also a great option. And until next time,
Happy reading,
Sam
